This posting by an OCA doctor asked for names of software that would make the transition from Walrus easy. A posted response named the two largest companies (and one other) and then said, "There are also other smaller venders, who may have a good product, but who may not be around that long, due to small market share and lack of staying power." While this is potentially true, Advanced Ortho (AOS) feels a need to respond with some pertinent facts that should also be considered by doctors seeking a new system.

First, only two of the vendors named are large and both have been around for 20+ years; the third company mentioned is actually the newest orthodontic management software vendor.

Second, AOS and a few of the other 'smaller vendors' are steadily and appreciably replacing systems from the two largest companies. And if you compare the number of users claimed by those companies now, versus the number claimed 10-15 years ago, you will find that their growth in total users has been very slow.

Of the companies that were acquired by the public entity (a) most were losing money when acquired (after being in business for years); and (b) the last annual report filed by that company (before it too was acquired) showed that it lost $7.1 million for the year and had an accumulated deficit of $32.5 million! This clearly shows that having a large number of users doesn't automatically indicate profitability or mean a company has staying power.

Privately-held AOS first achieved profitability in its second quarter of operations and its software has been in use for 8 years. AOS offers the only comprehensive orthodontic software that can operate over the Internet, or in a LAN, and the Internet-based system is so efficient that the company was actually able to reduce support fees for its users. Due to the large number of orthodontists referred by AOS users, and from visiting this website, the company no longer finds it necessary to advertise or attend trade shows to be financially successful.
